Gun Culture

Gun Culture exposes the untold story of clan warfare in the Sulu Archipelago, the most dangerous region of the Philippines where American troops are currently helping the local security forces track down the terrorist-listed Abu Sayyaf Group. Broadcast on Al Jazeera English’s documentary series, “People and Power” in June 2008. Running time: 21:00

Gun Culture was filmed by Orlando de Guzman at great personal risk deep in the Sulu countryside at a time when a bloody clan war was raging and Abu Sayyaf had kidnapped a local television crew. The film provides the missing link to any discussion about counter-terrorism in the southern Philippines, a region long crippled and destabilized by small yet violent clan feuds that color almost every aspect of social and political life.
