An investigation into land conflicts and the revival of Christian militias in Mindanao. Broadcast on the Al Jazeera English documentary series, “People and Power” in November 2008. Running time 21:00.
In the 1970s and 80s the Philippine government funded village militias in the southern island of Mindanao to stem the spread of a Muslim insurgency. Those same militias were also used to fight a growing Communist movement and the vigilante groups quickly morphed into much-feared death squads. These Christian vigilantes combine a fanatical view of the world drawn from cult beliefs to justify their violence. Armed and trained by the Philippine military, these vigilantes went on a killing spree at included Catholic priests, farmers, Muslim villagers, and journalists. Orlando de Guzman investigates the revival of these militias in Mindanao during the latest outbreak in fighting in 2008.
